Prescription eyeglasses are necessary to help you see clearly, but glasses can get in the way depending on the activities you do as part of your daily life. Wearing prescription contacts can help make getting through the day more efficient, without worrying that they will fall off your face. Many people successfully wear contact lenses; however, it is important to remember that contact lenses come with responsibility, and they are not without risk. Contact lens wear requires specific care to be followed to lower your risk of infection, complications or even blindness. Learn more about how contact lenses can help with your vision correction needs by speaking with an optometrist at Eyesite of Boynton Beach in Boynton Beach, FL.

The Benefits of Contact Lenses

Many people who wear contacts experience various benefits when compared to wearing eyeglasses. In addition to improving sight, the most common benefit is not wearing bulky eyeglasses that fall off the face or slide down the nose when doing various activities. Moreover, wearing contact lenses does not interfere with your facial appearance, which helps with self-confidence, knowing that they look good. Contact lenses can allow you to see well, play well, feel well, and look good.

What Vision Conditions Can Contact Lenses Correct?

Contact lenses help correct various eye conditions, allowing patients to see more clearly. Contacts commonly address refractive conditions, including nearsightedness, presbyopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Various contact lenses are designed to correct different vision conditions, providing patients with the visual clarity needed for their daily routine.

What is the process for trying Contact Lenses?

The first step in determining if you are a candidate for contact lenses, is to schedule a comprehensive examination with our optometrist. From here, we can determine what refractive error you have and whether your prescriptions may be correctable with contact lenses. At this exam, we will also assess the health of the eye to rule out any ocular surface conditions that may interfere with successful contact lens wear. Once the optometrist determines whether you are a candidate, we can schedule you for a contact lens fitting.

The next step is the contact lens fitting. At this appointment, you and your optometrist will discuss your goals and choose a contact lens brand/type that is best. You will trial contact lenses to obtain the best possible fit and vision. Once your optometrist finds the right lens for you, you will undergo training on how to insert and remove the contact lenses independently. You will also be instructed on how to properly care for your contact lenses and maintain good hygiene.

At the end of the contact lens exam, you will be provided with trial contact lenses to wear home. It is important to test your comfort and vision outside of the office, to ensure that the contacts will work for your daily tasks. After about one week, you will return to the office for a follow up evaluation. If you and the optometrist determine that the lenses were successful, you will be given a finalized contact lens prescription. If the lenses were not satisfactory, the doctor may trial a different brand or power.
