Eye Infections

It is common for people to get eye infections from time to time. Eye infections can come from a variety of sources, and you may never determine where you picked them up. If your eyes are swollen, itchy, or red, you may have an eye infection. Some common causes for eye infections include viruses and bacteria. If you suspect that you have an eye infection, you should contact your eyecare provider to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment.

Conjunctivitis, AKA Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye” occurs when the white part of the eye becomes inflamed. The blood vessels supplying this part of the eye become dilated, giving the eye its pink color. This type of eye infection is extremely common and can be highly contagious if it is caused by a virus or bacteria. When this happens, the eye will be inflamed and you may experience itchiness, crusting of the lids/lashes, and or discharge. If you have infectious conjunctivitis, it is important to wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your eyes, and avoid sharing towels/bedding with others. Keep in mind that there are also other causes of conjunctivitis, that are not necessarily infectious, such as allergies or chemical exposure.

Keratitis

This is another type of eye infection that is caused when the cornea of the eye becomes infected. The cornea is a layer that protects the eye, covering the pupil and iris. There are many kinds of infections that can affect the cornea, including fungi, bacteria, parasites, and viruses. If you are a contact lens wearer you can be at greater risk for these infections, especially if you do not replace or care for your lenses properly. If you suspect you have an infection of the cornea, you should seek out professional eye care as soon as possible to prevent damage and scarring to the cornea.
